    Pride Of Barbados

Barbados is definitely one of the island nations in the world that has so many things to be proud of. The motto of Barbados, which is "Pride and Industry", says it all. Who would have ever thought that this tiny island in the Caribbean could speak of volume of accomplishments that the people of Barbados should be proud of?

The pride of Barbados are innumerable, however there are some that are really worth mentioning. One of the many things that make Barbadian or Bajans as they would prefer to be called, is their national flower, which is aptly called "Pride of Barbados" (Dwarf Poinciana or Flower Fence). Because of their love for the flower, the Pride of Barbados is one of the many national symbols that are depicted in the Barbados coat of arms.

The early records of the Pride of Barbados dates back from 1657, which is actually a shrub that is usually trimmed because it can grow as high as 10-15 feet in height. The Pride of Barbados is one of the members of the Legume family and can be founding the almost all tropical countries.

The shrub can produce red and yellow colored flowers almost all year-round, however there are other colors that can be found but the two are the more prominent in the island nation. There are five petals in the Pride of Barbados with a yellowish color towards the tip. It also has ten long stamens with pistils that grow from the center. One interesting characteristic of the flower is that the fifth petal is peculiarly smaller than the other four. The branches of the flower have spikes with leaves that are large and measures one and a half foot.

More than the flower, one of the pride of Barbados is can be gleaned from the remarks of the United Nation Development Program. The country is hailed by UNDP as one of the most developed among the many developing countries with a literacy rate of 97% across for both men and women. In fact the country is also considered as one that has the highest standard of living especially in the Caribbean region.

In the 2005 report of The Economist, Barbados ranked 33 out of the 111 countries that were surveyed for the quality-of-life index in the world. In the survey conducted in 2005 by Heritage Foundation together with The Wall Street Journal and the Index of Economic Freedom, of the 155 countries that were included in the survey, Barbados made it to the 33rd spot.

Definitely Barbados has many things to offer to the world. All of these will definitely make any Bajans proud indeed.
